Mobile Money Fraud
Details
The Bank of Zambia, in collaboration with mobile money service providers, wishes to alert the public about increasing cases of mobile money fraud.
Fraudsters are using various tactics to deceive mobile money users, including:
- Fake promotional messages claiming users have won prizes or cash rewards - Calls from individuals pretending to be mobile money agents or customer service representatives - Requests to share PINs or reverse transactions to 'claim prizes' - SIM swap fraud to take over victims' mobile money accounts
In many cases, victims are asked to pay a 'processing fee' or 'tax' to claim their alleged winnings. Once payment is made, the fraudsters disappear with the money.
Mobile money service providers do NOT request PINs, conduct random promotions requiring upfront payments, or ask customers to reverse transactions to claim prizes.
If you receive such calls or messages, do not engage with the sender and report the incident to your mobile money provider and the Bank of Zambia.
Recommended Actions
- Never share your mobile money PIN with anyone
- Do not respond to unsolicited messages about prizes or promotions
- Verify any promotion directly with your mobile money provider through official channels
- Register your mobile money account with accurate personal information
- Report any suspicious activity to your mobile money provider immediately
- Be cautious of requests to reverse transactions
Report Suspicious Activity
If you have information about this or any other suspicious financial activity, please report it to the Bank of Zambia.
