Press Release: Introduction of New Banknote Security Features

The Bank of Zambia is pleased to announce the introduction of enhanced security features on the Kwacha banknotes, effective from January 2026.

These new security features are part of our ongoing efforts to combat counterfeiting and maintain public confidence in the national currency.

Key Security Features:

The enhanced banknotes will include the following new security features: • Color-shifting ink that changes color when viewed at different angles • Enhanced watermarks with improved visibility • Microprinting that is visible only under magnification • UV-reactive elements for authentication • Tactile features for the visually impaired

Transition Period:

The current banknotes will remain legal tender and will circulate alongside the enhanced notes. There is no need for the public to exchange their existing banknotes.
